Planters Nuts Recalled at Publix and Dollar Tree Stores Due to Listeria Concerns

Hormel Foods Sales has issued a recall for two varieties of Planters nuts produced in April due to potential contamination with listeria bacteria, which can lead to severe and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as older adults, individuals with weakened immune systems, and young children.

Although no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall, Hormel made the decision as a precautionary measure to ensure consumer safety, according to a company statement.

The affected nuts were distributed to Publix distribution centers in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and North Carolina, as well as Dollar Tree warehouses in South Carolina and Georgia.

Which Planters nuts products have been recalled?

  • 4-ounce Planters Honey Roasted Peanuts with a “Best if Used by” date of April 11, 2025, and a UPC code of 2900002097
  • 8.75-ounce Planters Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts with a “Best if Used by” date of April 5, 2026, and a UPC code of 2900001621

The recall is limited to specific sizes and varieties of Planters products, and no other packaging options are affected, Hormel emphasized in its press release.

Customers who have purchased the recalled nuts are advised to return them to the store of purchase for a refund or exchange. For further inquiries, individuals can reach out to Hormel Foods Customer Relations through online channels, chat, or by calling 800-523-4635.

Recognizing Listeria Infection Symptoms

Listeriosis, resulting from the consumption of contaminated food, poses a serious risk, particularly to individuals aged 65 and older, who are at a heightened risk of infection, as per the CDC.

Symptoms of listeria infection may include neck stiffness, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions, fever, muscle aches, and fatigue.

Pregnant women typically experience fever, fatigue, and muscle aches, but listeriosis can lead to adverse outcomes such as pregnancy loss or premature birth, with newborns also facing the risk of severe illness or death. Individuals exhibiting signs of severe listeria infection should promptly contact their healthcare provider.

The CDC estimates that approximately 1,600 cases of listeriosis occur annually in the U.S., resulting in an average of 260 deaths.
