Nationwide Recall Alert: Whole Foods Takes Urgent Measures Amid Listeria Concerns Linked to Rizo-López Foods

In a noteworthy response to a concerning Listeria outbreak linked to dairy products from Rizo-López Foods, Whole Foods has proactively initiated a nationwide recall, affecting its Ricotta and a range of other dairy products in February 2024.

The consequences of this outbreak have been substantial, with confirmed reports of two fatalities in California and Texas tied to Rizo-López Foods’ cheese and dairy products. Hospitalizations have occurred in at least 23 individuals across 11 states, with ongoing investigations hinting at the potential underreporting of cases, as per the CDC Outbreak Investigation.

A Prolonged Challenge

The origins of this enduring outbreak date back to 2014, persisting for nearly a decade until authorities pinpointed the Listeria strain within a facility connected to Rizo-López Foods’ cheese production.

This recall encompasses a diverse range of dairy products marketed under 13 brand names, including the widely recognized 365 Whole Foods Market.

What are the Recalled Products?

Whole Foods has specifically flagged the following products for recall:

  • 365 Whole Foods Market Ricotta (Whole Milk): 15-oz., UPC 9-94824-96245, All dates through 04/02/2024
  • 365 Whole Foods Market Ricotta (Part Skim): 15-oz., UPC 9-94824-63052, All dates through 04/02/2024

Risk Considerations

Listeria monocytogenes presents escalated risks, particularly for pregnant individuals, those exceeding 65 years of age, or those with compromised immune systems. Such demographics face heightened vulnerability to severe complications if the Listeria infection spreads within their bodies.

Identifying Listeria Symptoms

Symptoms of Listeria typically surface within two weeks of consuming contaminated food but may incubate for up to 70 days. Pregnant women often experience fever, muscle aches, or fatigue, while non-pregnant individuals may manifest symptoms like fever, muscle aches, fatigue, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or seizures.
