Miami-Based Meat Producer Recalls Products Over Listeria Concerns

Miami meat processor, Don Novo & Son, has initiated a recall of approximately 9,330 pounds of pork products due to potential listeria contamination, as announced by the USDA.

Marketed under the Don Novo brand, these five recalled meat products were distributed to various retail stores across Florida. Publix, a prominent grocery chain, has identified four Don Novo meat products sold in its stores.

Listeria, a bacterium responsible for approximately 1,600 infections and 260 fatalities annually in the United States, poses severe risks, particularly to individuals over 65, pregnant women, children under 5, and newborns.

All the recalled products, identifiable by the “EST. 34257” in the USDA inspection mark and an expiration date of “3/30/2024,” come in shrink-wrapped packaging. The affected items include:

  • 1-pound Chorizo Fully Cooked.
  • 1-pound Costillas Ahumadas or Smoked Pork Ribs.
  • 12-pound Jamon Dulce or Sweet Cooked Ham and Water Products (not sold by Publix).
  • 5.4-pound to 5.5-pound Mortadella Cubana or Cuban Brand Mortadela.
  • 1.5-pound Lomo Ahumado or Smoked Pork Loin.

The recall follows a state of Florida testing of a food sample that detected listeria, prompting immediate action to mitigate potential health risks. Consumers are urged to check their purchased products for the specified identification marks and expiration date and either discard them or return them to the point of purchase for a refund.
