Foppen Seafood has issued a recall for its smoked salmon sold at Kroger and Pay Less Super Market locations across 15 states after routine testing revealed potential listeria contamination.
The recall specifically involves Smoked Norwegian Salmon Slices in 8.1-ounce packages, identifiable by lot number 412 visible in the clear plastic window on the front of the package. This product was distributed in stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia.
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can lead to listeriosis, a serious infection. Symptoms of mild listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, vomiting, and diarrhea. More severe symptoms can include headache, stiff neck, confusion, and convulsions. According to the CDC, approximately 1,600 cases of listeriosis occur annually in the U.S., resulting in around 260 deaths.
“At Foppen Seafood, we maintain the highest standards of health, safety, and quality control. We have taken immediate steps to address this isolated incident and are working closely with Kroger and the FDA to ensure a swift resolution,” the company stated.
Customers who purchased the affected smoked salmon are advised to discard the product or return it to the place of purchase for a refund or replacement.
