Snapchill Coffee has announced a nationwide recall of its canned cold brew coffee products due to fears they could contain the deadly botulinum toxin. This recall affects all Snapchill canned coffee sold by various roasters across the country.
According to the Green Bay, Wisconsin-based company, the manufacturing process for these products may lead to the growth of botulinum toxin in low-acid canned foods. The FDA posted a notice last week about the potential risk.
Botulism is a rare but serious illness caused by a toxin that attacks the nervous system, leading to difficulty in breathing, muscle paralysis, and potentially death, according to the CDC. Foods that are home-canned, preserved, or fermented can create conditions that allow botulinum toxin to develop. Consumption of contaminated foods can result in severe illness or death if not treated promptly.
Symptoms of botulism include trouble swallowing, muscle weakness, double vision, drooping eyelids, blurry vision, slurred speech, vomiting, and diarrhea. The CDC advises anyone experiencing these symptoms to seek immediate medical attention.
Snapchill has stated that there have been no reports of illnesses linked to their products. The issue came to light when the FDA notified the company that its manufacturing process for the recalled products had not been filed with the agency as required. Snapchill is currently working to address this oversight.
The recall covers nearly 300 products sold under various roaster and brand names, packaged in metal cans ranging from 7 to 12 ounces. A complete list of the recalled products can be viewed on the FDA website.
Consumers who purchased these products are advised to destroy them or return them for a refund.
