October 24, 2023 – An outbreak of Salmonella linked to Gills Onions of Oxnard, CA has now affected 73 people in 22 states in a report stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC Report).
Of the 73 individuals affected by the diced onions, 15 required hospitalization due to the severity of their sickness.
The number of case counts by state is as follows: Arizona (1), California (17), Colorado (1), Georgia (1), Iowa (1), Idaho (1), Illinois (4), Indiana (2), Kentucky (1) Massachusetts (1) Michigan (6), Montana (2), North Dakota (2), New York (1), Ohio (3), Oregon (3), Tennessee (1), Texas (1), Utah (17), Virginia (3), Wisconsin (3), and Wyoming (1).
A number of victims have been identified as living in a long term care facility. Officials gained a break in the investigation when they identified a group of 3 victims who live in the same facility. Through their investigative efforts, Food and Drug Administration officials discovered that the onions which were processed at Gills Onions we available at points where patients ate before they became sickened by Salmonella poisoning. Furthermore, meal records from these facilities confirmed that residents were served diced onions that were produced by Gills Onions.
On October 24, 2023, Gills Onions initiated a recall of fresh diced onion products including diced yellow onions, diced red onions and mirepoix (a blend containing diced onions, carrots and celery). The recalled onion products were sold in select stores as well as restaurants and institutions (such as the health care facility mentioned) nationwide.
