Several Children Sickened by Tainted Applesauce Pouches Containing Lead

Health officials in the United States are issuing an advisory for doctors to be on the alert for potential lead poisoning cases in children. This advisory has been issued following news of 22 toddlers located across 14 states (Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Washington) being sickened by tainted pouches containing cinnamon apple puree and applesauce.

Of the affected children, aged 1-3, at least one of the children displayed a blood level which was eight times higher than the benchmark level for concern.

No safe level of lead exposure exists but the Centers for Disease Control uses a marker of 3.5 mg/dl in order to identify any children who have higher levels than most. In the group of affected children, the blood lead levels ranged anywhere from 4-29 mg/dl.

Symptoms reported in affected children include the following:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • A change in activity level
  • Anemia

The illnesses reported are linked to an outbreak connected to recalled pouches of fruit puree under the brands WanaBana, Schnucks and Weis. WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree, Weis cinnamon applesauce pouches and Schnucks products were sold both in-stores and also online.

Anyone who may have consumed these products are advised to seek out a healthcare professional to undergo testing for lead poisoning. According to experts, it is a possibility that children who have been affected may not display symptoms of lead poisoning. Testing for lead poisoning is highly important as exposure can lead to serious learning and behavior issues. Heavy metals can cohere with food products via soil, air, water or industrial processes.
